What Is A Guitar String Winder?
A guitar string winder – sometimes called a guitar peg winder – is a simple tool that makes changing your guitar strings faster and easier. They are usually made from hard wearing plastic, and feature a hollow end that fits around the tuning pegs (tuning machines) of your guitar. On the other end is a handle that you can turn clockwise or anti-clockwise as needed, to loosen or tighten the strings. This means you can remove strings or install new strings on your guitar with less time and effort than otherwise.
As well as saving time, guitar string winders can be very useful for those who find it painful or awkward to adjust the pegs by hand.
Battery Powered Guitar String Winders
As well as the conventional manual string winders, you can also get battery-powered models such as the Ernie Ball PowerPeg, which makes the winding process even more efficient – this particular model claims to be up to 70% faster than normal string winders!
Additional String Winder Features
There’s more to these little tools than meets the eye however. Some string winders feature ergonomically styled handles, to make them more comfortable to use. And as well as the basic winding function, you can buy string winders that have additional features too.
For example, many string winders also feature an additional peg tool for pulling out acoustic guitar string pins at the bridge. A string winder/cutter may include a string cutting tool, and some are even glow-in-the-dark so they can easily be used in dimly lit environments such as on the stage.
Buying A String Winder For Your Guitar
String winders are inexpensive tools, and can be bought for just a few pounds (or dollars). They can be found in the guitar accessories section of just about any guitar or music supply store, although you can normally get better prices online, especially on large sites such as Amazon or eBay.
